Entry Eleven: Theorizing the Farm Through Jane Smiley

The farm is a place where individuals can create. Often, though, this creation becomes a power complex that causes individuals to believe they have risen to the position of a God or at least above nature. In her novel, A Thousand Acres, author Jane Smiley touches on this sentiment. Her work, taken from the plot of King Lear, deconstructs a romantic view of the farm by illustrating the issues that can arise when one believes that their power is superior to the power of nature or God. Smiley’s text, then, indicates that while the creative that comes from the farm can serve to empower, allowing that creativity to translate to ego can lead to disastrous results.
