Entry Ten: Theorizing the Farm Through Wendell Berry

In his collection of essays, The Art of the Commonplace, author Wendell Berry discusses his vision for revitalizing agriculture in American society.  Despite farmers being a statistical minority in the modern world of agribusiness, farming is still a culturally relevant practice. Berry warns urbanites from separating themselves further from their agrarian foundation. Humans share a natural kinship with the land; urbanism is often a rebuttal of that kinship—a perversion that disrupts the symbiotic relationship. Often, he argues, “the wholeness of the earth is broken” (x) as a result of a disconnect between people and the land.
